About Dean

I have been a California licensed psychologist (License PSY 15503) since 1998, and earned a PhD in clinical psychology (from the California School of Professional Psychology) in 1996.

  • Over this time, from the 1990s through the present, I have intensively studied a number of approaches to psychotherapy and human development in order to be as helpful and effective as I can.
  • Which of these approaches I may apply in your situation will depend on your unique needs and what we decide together best fits for you. They include psychodynamic/depth psychology (including object relations and self psychology), relational, cognitive-behavioral and humanistic perspectives.
  • Often, I use mindfulness and a body/somatic focus to deepen awareness and accelerate change.
  • I also draw on my studies of trauma (including Somatic Experiencing as developed by Peter Levine), Buddhist psychology and the current and exciting developments in brain science.

Although you may not be familiar with many of these approaches, if they become relevant to our work together and you want to know more, I'm happy to explain them to you in ways that make sense. Then we can think through together what blend of techniques and approaches is best for you.

I'll also share with you how I'm viewing your difficulties, using easy to understand, plain English – and in ways that offer hope rather than in a manner that may feel limiting or constricting.

Besides being a therapist, I'm also an executive coach and have provided coaching at Google, Genentech, HP, Toyota, Wells Fargo, UCSF and many other global corporations, as well as at startups, other small and medium-size businesses, government agencies, institutions and nonprofits.

  • This work has supported my development as a therapist because in organizations, change within leaders is often necessary and is typically measured. This has required me to continually adopt and develop techniques that lead to significant improvements in my clients over short periods of time.

I have repeatedly seen that great change is possible – change that enrichens our own lives, and the lives of those we touch. I am grateful to serve as part of this process.

If you're feeling curious about potentially working together, I encourage you to call me or send me a note. I'm very happy to talk, learn more about you, and discuss some options for how meaningful change can begin to happen for you.
